Protein by DunneFrankowski is a must visit coffee shop and an integral feature of London’s coffee culture. Tucked away on a sleepy side street in Shoreditch, just off Curtain Road, it’s a hidden gem. The beauty of this place is its simplicity. It has a clean, back to basics style with the focus simply on coffee.

Protein is a collaboration between Protein and DunneFrankowski (Rob Dunne and Vic Frankowski) and these guys really do know how to make good coffee. I went for a double espresso and it was one of the best espressos I have had in a while. If you fancy learning more, they run tasting classes every month (photos below), which teach you how to appreciate the subtle nuances and flavours of the drink. With my espresso I picked up some floral notes and a sweet finish!

The shop itself is designed in a very minimal style with a long bar, inviting discussion. On my visit, I struck up a conversation with Rob Dunne himself, who explained to me the concept behind the shop – a place where anyone can go to discuss ideas with the aim of broadening the mind. Everyone in there is an equal, whether you are a banker, a student, an artist, or whatever – you’re all on the same platform. This sense of equality harks back to the earliest coffee houses in London.

Rob is extremely knowledgeable and spoke to me for a good half hour about how best to serve and savour coffee in order to get the most out of it. It was very inspiring to hear someone so passionate talking about the subject. Dunne & Frankowski are legends within the industry and are more than willing to school you in any aspect of coffee that you’d like brushing up on.

As we all know, London is very diverse, but this independent definitely stands out for its unique qualities – one being that they only offer royalty cards to loyal customers, adding a personal touch to how they reward their coffee lovers. If you’re a coffee geek and get annoyed when coffee shops have just the right ingredients to serve great coffee but fail at the final product, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise here!
