Love in a cup

Love in a cup is a fantastic little coffee shop on Osborn Street, a few minutes walk away from Aldgate East Tube. A friend of mine spends a lot of time around Brick Lane and he advised me to check out this coffee shop. It didn’t disappoint.

Love in a cup is small. Kash, the owner, chose this intimate spot as it makes the coffee drinking experience very personal and encourages conversation between customers. Kash is a super friendly Australian with many a bright idea. He will soon expand the business with the inclusion of a mobile coffee cart in the area.  Kash’s warm hospitality and extensive knowledge of coffee ensured that I was at Love in a cup for a good 45 minutes chatting away about coffee. He told me about two of his more unusual drinks: the genera and the primo.

The genera is a concoction Kash brought over from Australia and as far as he knows, his was the first coffee shop in London to sell it. It is very similar to a Latte or a Flat White (closer to the Latte with more bubbles in the milk) but has some fresh orange rind in the coffee which gives it a very unique flavour, not unlike Terry’s Chocolate Orange. The Primo is an extremely strong (4 shots) latte and is not for the faint hearted. The Nude Espresso blend has deliciously strong chocolate undertones, with the shop definitely living up to its name.

I didn’t get a chance to sample some of the food on display but it was very popular with the people who came in while I was chatting away about the coffee. Try the very popular bacon and cheese toasted English muffins or if you’re in the mood for something a little lighter, they serve freshly-baked croissants and cookies.

Love in a cup is the first shop that I have seen where the customers’ loyalty cards are pinned up on the wall next to the counter. This means that Kash and Dale know all the regulars by name. Kash tells me it’s a slight problem during the early morning rush, trying to work out where everyone’s cards are but its a very popular concept. The idea was put forth by a forgetful customer that religiously misplaced his card!

All in all, this is a fantastic coffee shop. People go out of their way to stop by before starting their day and you can absolutely see why.
